Challenge
Rocks and geological structures of Tbilisi define the shape and relief of the topographical background on which the city history unfolds. The architecture of the Art Hotel envelops one of these rocks and opens up incredible opportunities for creativity. And a special challenge, which was definitely successful, was that Ukrainian studio carried out a project so important for the cultural layer. It’s about the task of creating something real without clichés.
Layout
The hotel with an area of 6,930 square meters will become not only a magical place to relax but also an art space where exhibitions of modern art will be held. That is why YODEZEEN designers created an interior that will emphasize the functional features of the room and immerse the guest in the atmosphere of Georgia.
Concept
Georgia is known all over the world for its hospitality and vibrancy, and in this project YODEZEEN immerses visitors in a country where art, history and nature are of special importance. These elements create the present as it is, and therefore the main task of such a space is to become a business card of Tbilisi. From the thoughtful planning of the architecture around the real rock to each carefully selected material, it’s all about Georgia as the artists see it.
Implementation
The spa area is distinguished by an unusual combination of colors because classic spas usually have a darker atmosphere. The YODEZEEN team always approaches such areas as art objects, so the designers placed many contrasting elements on a light background. The studio’s favorite travertine appears here precisely in a fiery shade, and the light plastering on the radius ceiling becomes the perfect background. The caustic effect can be traced almost throughout the area — light patterns appear when light is refracted and reflected from the surface. The first architectural element of the entrance area was a custom-made rack of chopped red travertine and thin metal rods. Such art elements have already become a feature of the studio. The phyto-zone is also distinguished by authentic art in the form of a tree trunk filled with epoxy resin. Part of the room lets in daylight through a skylight, echoing the interior of the restaurant. The recreation areas also stand out: the herbal bath is distinguished by a decorative element on the ceiling made of different types of herbs, the hammam received a characteristic accent ceiling made of red travertine, the snow room became the lightest and closest to the natural phenomena of Georgia thanks to the carved stone, and the sauna, unlike its classical representation, lined with dark wood.
Materials
Aged oak, rock stone, corten steel, Forest Green marble, ethnic macrame, terracotta-ochre plastering and cobblestones were the main materials used in the lobby area.
