Challenge

The primary challenge was achieving a balance between contemporary design and cultural references, ensuring that the residence blends seamlessly with its natural surroundings while offering privacy and comfort. The harsh local climate required innovative design solutions for shading, cooling, and integrating lush outdoor areas. The project demanded cohesive architectural and interior design across multiple structures, each with a distinct purpose, while maintaining a unified architectural language. Yodezeen’s expertise in high-end residential projects allowed them to create a high-end architecture experience that harmonizes with both nature and culture.

Layout

The Dune residence features several interconnected buildings, each designed for different functions, yet united by a common design theme. A paved pathway leads through archways to the main entrance, where traditional-style screens offer privacy while casting artistic shadows inside the home. The spacious layout includes numerous lounge areas, both indoors and outdoors, such as sunken seating arrangements and sofa nooks inside arched spaces. The rear of the property boasts a large pool surrounded by custom designer loungers, with preserved palm trees adding a touch of nature. Between two buildings, a tree grows through a specially designed opening in the roof, symbolizing the residence’s connection with the environment.

Concept

The concept of the Dune residence is rooted in creating a deep connection with both the surrounding desert landscape and the cultural context of Saudi Arabia. The structure’s sandy tones and clean lines echo the natural forms of the dunes, while the design’s symmetry and balance evoke a sense of calm and order. Traditional screens inspired by regional craftsmanship serve not only as a privacy feature but also enhance the aesthetics, casting intricate shadows throughout the day. The floating roof effect, achieved through hidden structural supports and open gaps, brings an airy, lightweight feel to the space, promoting ventilation and reducing heat exposure.

Implementation

Yodezeen implemented the Dune concept by carefully considering how architecture can coexist with nature. The tree growing between the buildings, the outdoor seating areas, and the floating roof design all emphasize a harmonious integration with the environment. The outdoor fireplace, set within a water feature, symbolizes the fusion of natural elements — fire and water — creating a captivating focal point in the backyard.

Privacy is maintained with a high stone wall surrounding the property, while the gates are designed in line with the screens, incorporating Eastern design motifs. Through thoughtful design and material selection, the residence is a perfect fusion of modern architecture and cultural expression, offering a peaceful sanctuary in the desert.
